My suggestion is to make your own cards at the bottom and right side up and make the opponent's card be upside down. I feel like that is more natural since that is how it would be when you play the game for real.

Agreed. That confused me at first too. I also assumed on mobile that my cards would be on the left instead of right. Maybe some kind of label would help? Not a big deal once you know it though.

From a practical perspective, having your side of the board nearer your hand means less scrolling, but the game has a bunch of user preferences that will allow you to rearrange the layout as desired.
