I selected 4 decks. Though at the start of the game (before any cards were dealt) the number on top of the deck states 155. ( I assume that number is the number of cards still in the deck. )

I respectfully think that it does not make any sense to keep track of the number of discarded cards.
Also, I do not understand why a match should start with 155 discarded cards… I am not a blackjack player, so any explanations would be helpful to understand.

From the Wikipedia page you quoted, the shoe is the deck and not the discard pile. Thus, I don’t see any reason why to write the number of discarded cards (and also why starting a game with 155 discarded cards, just to complicate players counting discarded cards) instead of the number of remaining deck cards.

This is still an issue. Playing 6 deck games start the shoe with varying amounts of cards in the 70s or 80s. There should be 312 cards in the shoe at the start of every game.
